8 June is World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is celebrated across the globe on Friday June 8 with hundreds of events planned.

No matter where you are located around the world, there is bound to be an Ocean Day celebration that you can get involved in Check out the World Oceans Day event map to find events happening near you.  From aquatic cleanups to film screenings, and festivals to fun runs, there is a celebration for everyone this World Oceans Day. Use the event map search to find plastic pollution focused events as well as celebrations for youth. Here’s a snapshot of some events happening this year:

Australian Events

Official World Ocean Day events are being held across Australia at Frankston (VIC), Sydney (NSW), Gold Coast (QLD), Canberra (ACT), Mackay (QLD), Noosa (QLD), Townsville (QLD), Perth (WA), Adelaide (SA), Melbourne (VIC). There’s bound to be others not listed – check your local community bulletin boards for events near your place!

Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium will host the 5K Turtle Trot, a fundraiser that will benefit the research and conservation of many different marine species. Join them on June 2 to run, jog and walk for ocean animals!

March for the Ocean

On June 9, thousands of ocean advocates will March for the Ocean in Washington D.C. to promote ocean solutions for the problems that threaten our blue planet. Sister marches will also take place in New York, Chicago, London, Dublin, Rio de Janeiro and many other cities around the world.

Limbe International Ocean Week

The first International Ocean Week will be held in Cameroon June 6-8 in the seaside town on Limbe. Activities include a beach cleanup, educational seminars, exhibitions, cultural events and much more.

North Carolina Aquariums

North Carolina Aquarium locations including Pine Knoll Shoresand Roanoke Island will be celebrating World Oceans Day 2018 with a variety of activities. Visitors will learn through games and activities about our fantastic ocean and the challenges it faces today.

Healthy Seas Initiative

On June 8, join the Healthy Seas Initiative, Cousteau Divers and Carvico for a journey from waste to wear as they celebrate World Oceans Day on the beautiful island of Santorini, in Greece! Diving partners, Ghost Fishing and Atlantis Dive Center, will be removing discarded fishing gear from the bottom of the sea. Pierre-Yves Cousteau will be narrating the diving mission in live stream from the depths of the Aegean and answering questions. Resort World Sentosa / S.E.A. Aquarium

Resort World Sentosa’s Ocean Fest is calling ocean-lovers to come learn about the impact of plastic pollution in the ocean and how you can help reduce it. Visitors can play the role of a detective in Ocean Lab, browse through a range of eco-friendly products at the Ocean Eco-market or join Green Workshops.

World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council

World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council members will host and participate in a number of events around June 8. Many Council members will also be organizing a lesson on plastic pollution in their local schools and communities. You can teach the same lesson at your event! Visit this page for more information.

Federacion Costarricense de Pesca

The Federacion Costarricense de Pesca will be hosting talks in local Costa Rican schools as well as organizing beach cleanups. Schools, local governments and other organizations will be joining them in their efforts.
